We are thrilled to welcome back Terri Stanley-Clarke to our Bundoora rooms following her maternity leave after baby number two. Terri is a highly experienced therapist and a much-valued member of our team. During her leave, she achieved a significant career milestone — receiving full AHTA accreditation, a rigorous and highly regarded process that recognises advanced practice in hand therapy.

Accredited Hand Therapist

Terri’s expertise, calm nature, and confident clinical approach have been truly missed by both our staff and patients, and we are delighted to have her back on board.

As our services expand and we continue to strengthen our connections with referring surgeons, we’re excited to introduce new team members and share this month’s updates, staff recognition, and practical clinical insights.

Staff Updates: Growth & Team News

We are excited to welcome Monica Soliman, Physiotherapist, to the MHT team. Originally from Adelaide, Monica brings a strong background in musculoskeletal physiotherapy from her work in a public hospital outpatient setting, as well as community-based rehabilitation.

Monica has a keen interest in the role of the hand and upper limb in daily function, and she is passionate about helping clients regain independence and confidence through personalised rehab programs. You’ll find Monica consulting at our Bundoora rooms.

Team Member of the Month

Villa Wu

This month, we proudly recognise Villa Wu, our brilliant full-time receptionist at our Box Hill rooms.

Villa plays a vital behind-the-scenes role — together with all our admin team members — assisting in handling over 420 phone calls per month, managing referrals, and ensuring all patient imaging is available prior to appointments. Her dedication, efficiency, and proactive approach to problem-solving makes a real difference to our clinical flow and patient experience.

Villa’s ability to communicate in Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, and English has also been invaluable to our patients. On many occasions, we have been able to utilise her multi-lingual skills to assist patients without an interpreter or family member, ensuring smooth and accurate communication.

We are incredibly lucky to have Villa as part of the MHT team, and we appreciate the way she works alongside our entire admin group to keep everything running seamlessly.

Understanding Scaphoid Fractures

The scaphoid is a small carpal bone on the thumb side of the wrist, playing a crucial role in wrist stability and movement. A scaphoid fracture often occurs after a fall onto an outstretched hand (FOOSH injury).

Scaphoid Fracture

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain and swelling near the base of the thumb
  • Difficulty gripping or moving the wrist
  • Tenderness in the “anatomical snuffbox”

Why These Fractures Can Be Missed

Scaphoid fractures don’t always appear on early X-rays and can cause only mild discomfort, leading to delayed diagnosis. If untreated, they may progress to non-union or avascular necrosis due to poor blood supply.

Treatment Options

Depending on the fracture’s severity and location:

  • Non-surgical care involves immobilisation with a splint or cast for 6–12 weeks.
Surgical
  • Surgical management, such as internal fixation with screws, may be needed for complex or displaced fractures.

Early assessment and correct imaging are critical — our therapists are trained to detect subtle signs and guide optimal management.
